The Fundamentals of Natural Movement

man climbing a rope in a gym

At some point in your life you’ve probably lifted, carried, or thrown an object. You’ve probably ran, jumped, or climbed a tree. Maybe you tried to balance on a parking curb while walking aimlessly with friends. I know for a fact you used to crawl as a baby.

What I’m trying to get at is that these are all movements that humans evolved to do.

You don’t need to play baseball to know how to throw effectively.

You don’t need to be a strongman to be able to move a couch without tweaking your back.

Being effective at balancing doesn’t mean walking a tightrope between skyscrapers.

These activities belong as much to you and me as any professional.

Natural Movement is a movement philosophy and fitness approach aimed at helping individuals connect with their bodies through exploring the movements that make us human. It’s about practicing movement skills that are required in settings and situations that arise outside the gym, while having fun in the process.

It’s about practice and preparedness. It’s about being capable in times of need.

When I teach a Natural Movement Class alongside Aviv Adar, we might have you practice walking across a balance beam, throw a ball around in a circle, or get up off the ground in various ways. We might practice crawling up and down a hill, learn the fundamentals of jumping, or introduce participants to the basics of climbing a tree. We practice breathwork, mindful movement and fluidity of motion. We play games. We explore movements across all domains, and scale them to your comfort level.

If all this sounds interesting to you and you're in the Toronto area, We'll be teaching a Natural Movement Class starting Wednesday May 15th 2024 at 5:30 pm, in Christie Pits park. More info and signup here

Can't wait to see you there!
